A Look Back at Mugler’s Most Iconic A-list Creations

The fashion community mourns the death of Thierry Mugler (73), who passed on January 23, 2022 in Paris, France. A tribute post described him as “a visionary whose imagination… empowered people around the world to be bolder and dream bigger every day.” In honor of his legacy, here is a timeline of iconic looks that Mr. Mugler was behind.

Kim Kardashian at the 2019 Met Gala

Once again breaking the internet, Kim Kardashain stunned in Mugler’s first design in almost 20 years. Giving the optical illusion of what Mugler described as ” this California girl stepping out of the ocean, wet, dripping.”

Mugler kept eyes on Kardashian in a naval plunge, turquoise latex dress with matching boots and gloves. The silver fringe detail, incorporated into her wig as well, was inspired by Cher. Kim gave credit to Mugler in his attention to detail, from the main piece itself to the color of her nails.

‘Sex and the City’s’ Samantha Jones

It is no coincidence that Samantha Jones was always the best dressed character in the New York City based TV show, ‘Sex and the City’. Mugler was the man behind the majority of the sexy and confident characters wardrobe, including this yellow suit jacket with a distinct cut. Over the course of the show (and movies), the wardrobe of actress Kim Cattrall consisted of statement businesswoman attire, with Mugler’s twist of sexiness and power.

Alexa Demie in ‘Euphoria’

HBO phenomenon ‘Euphoria’, has been credited for their costume work over the last season and this season is no different. Alexa Demie, who plays the luxurious Maddy Perez, was filmed in this 1991 Vampire Mugler dress. Demie has been styled in Mugler previously at a party honoring members of “Hollywood Rising.” She was photographed in a Mugler gown, paired with gloves and hosiery.

Cardi B at Paris Fashion Week

Cardi B stepped out in an extravagant feather Mugler ensemble. From the cape to the dress all the way to Cardi’s bedazzled eyebrows, the Mugler piece came to life.

Cardi B at the Grammy Awards 2019

One of the most unforgettable red-carpet moments was Cardi B in a vintage 1995-96 Mugler couture look. The pink satin and black velvet dress opened up to display the entertainer as a pearl blossoming out of a shell. Inspired by The Birth of Venus, this Mugler piece is one that is most talked about.

Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford on the Runway

The sexy, seductive and dominatrix theme behind Mugler’s work was perfectly portrayed in the looks worn by Campbell and Crawford in Spring 1991.
